New babies and early years

Welcoming your new baby

When you've had a baby, things can seem overwhelming. The NHS website provides advice and guidance on the key things you need to know about caring for your new baby and for yourself.

Along with the basics, there are some official things that you will need to do, such as register the birth.

You will also have a range of checks at birth and following the birth including health visitor checks. You can find out more about what to expect on the NHS website

Your child's health record

Shortly before or after your baby is born, you'll be given a personal child health record. This usually has a red cover and is known as the Red Book. It's a good idea to take your baby's Red Book with you every time you visit the baby clinic or GP.

You can also choose to use the eRedbook app to record and view your child’s health records online.

Family Nurse Partnership

The Tower Hamlets Family Nurse Partnership (FNP), run by the GP Care Group, is a voluntary home visiting programme for first-time young mums and families.

The programme is designed to help parents who have a healthy pregnancy, improve their child’s health and development, and support them with planning their own futures and achieve their aspirations.
